Description

This zwitterionic representative of well known PEGylated undecanethiol gold standard is an interesting example of novel ultra-non-fouling SAM building-block. As demonstrated by Akash Gupta and colleagues it provides high colloidal stability to medium and large gold nanoparticles while maintaining their low unspecific protein binding even in undiluted body fluids.
Carboxybetaine termination supports further attachment of macromolecules including proteins and polypeptides, enabling a simple "plug and play" strategy. Additionally the nanoparticles stabilised with this molecule exhibit robust resistance to freeze-dry and changes in ionic strength over wide range, while still maintaining functionalization capabilities (Ultra-stable Biofunctionalizable Gold Nanoparticles, ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, 2016, 8, 14096–14101).
