SAMs of amide-terminated alkane thiols have been used as templates for hydrogen-bond mediated polymerization of conductive diacetylenes (J. Am. Chem. Soc.2003, 125, 10532-10533), and in fundamental studies of the effects of surface wettability on the adhesion of proteins (Langmuir2004, 20, 7779-7788). Owing to the lateral hydrogen bonds between terminal amide groups, the SAMs made of this product have increased thermal stability (by as much as 50oC, J. Phys. Chem. B2002, 106, 10401-10409).
