Biotinylated thiols coating these NPs bind very tightly (Kd ~ 10-15!) and specifically to streptavidin and avidin constructs (for review, see Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2004, 43, 6042).In addition to affinity-binding applications, biotinylated AuNPs have been used for programmed assembly of nanostructured materials (Adv. Mater. 1999, 11, 1202; Langmuir 2005, 21, 10756), in optical biochemical sensors (Anal. Chem. 2003, 75, 16), to study plasmon-exciton interactions in mixtures of semiconductor and gold NPs (Nano Lett., 2004, 4, 2323) and as components of protein microarrays (Anal. Chem. 2005, 77, 5770). For more examples of applications, see Chem. Rev. 2004, 104, 293.
