Hydroxy terminated thiols impart surface hydrophilicity, and/or are often used as dilution reagents on a gold surface to control the density of reactive groups. At the same time, they form monolayers moderately resistant to the adsorption of selected proteins. Ostuni et al. (Langmuir, 2001, 17, 5605) reported that SAMs made of 11-hydroxy-1-undecanethiol showed 35-50% surface coverage of fibrinogen, but only ~ 1% coverage of lysozyme. Other uses of these compounds are discussed in our review. Current Organic Chemistry, 2004
